Kimberley, Northern Cape – The William Humphreys Art Gallery (WHAG) is proud to announce the opening of South African Landscapes – Then and Now, a captivating exhibition that celebrates the diverse interpretations of South Africa’s landscapes through the works of renowned artists spanning generations. This unique showcase draws from WHAG’s permanent collection and will be on view from 31 October 2024 to 21 February 2025 in the Far Wing Gallery Space of WHAG.
Featuring an exceptional selection of paintings and charcoal drawings, the exhibition brings together the visionary perspectives of old and contemporary masters, including: John Koenakeefe Mohl (poster artwork), Andrew Motjuoadi, Cobus Van Bosch, Edward Roworth, Erik Laubscher, Gillian Maylam, Gwelo Goodman, Hannes Meintjes, Jan Volschenk, Johannes Van Heerden, John Ferguson, John Meyer, Joshua Miles, Josua Andries Nell, Matthew Whippman, Maud Sumner, Nico Roos, Pieter Wenning, Rowland Pym, Simon Lekgetho, Stefan Ampenberger, Terence McCaw, Themba Khumalo, Thomas Bowler, Walter Westbrook, Willem Pretorius and William Timlin
The exhibition juxtaposes historic and contemporary interpretations of the South African environment, inviting viewers to reflect on how artistic expressions of landscape evolve over time. From the serene rural settings of Pieter Wenning and Maud Sumner to the atmospheric charcoal works of Themba Khumalo and Andrew Motjuoadi, each artwork resonates with the artists’ unique engagement with their surroundings.
