The William Humphreys Art Gallery (WHAG) is delighted to present SANKOFA: 360 Degree Exhibition, an extraordinary retrospective honouring the remarkable six-decade artistic journey of Rochester ‘Rocky’ Mafafo, an important figure in South African art. Born in Galeshewe in 1956, Mafafo began his formal training at the renowned Rorke’s Drift Centre, where he earned his Certificate in 1977. This landmark exhibition, the first of its kind, offers an in-depth look at Mafafo’s evolution and impact, featuring an extensive collection of his works from 1965 to 2024.
Inspired by SANKOFA, a Ghanaian concept emphasizing the importance of drawing wisdom from the past, this exhibition invites viewers to experience Mafafo’s artistic legacy in full. Through a diverse range of sculptures, paintings, mixed media, and drawings, SANKOFA: 360 Degree reflects his exploration of identity, memory, and the shared cultural narratives that have influenced South Africa’s evolving socio-political landscape.
The exhibition traces the key phases of Mafafo’s career, from his politically charged beginnings in the 1960s to his experimental periods of the 1980s and 1990s and his recent reflective creations. With archival materials, personal sketches, and recorded insights, SANKOFA provides an intimate look into Mafafo’s evolving themes and techniques and the cultural impact of his work.
“With SANKOFA 360, we celebrate Rocky Mafafo’s profound influence and lasting legacy. His work captures universal themes of identity, justice, and resilience, resonating with audiences across generations,” remarked Chepape Makgato, Chief Curator at WHAG. “This exhibition goes beyond a retrospective—it is a tribute to the enduring spirit of his art and a recognition of his lifelong dedication to teaching, mentoring young artists, and fostering an appreciation for art within the communities of Kimberley and Galeshewe. His works are well-represented in numerous local collections, making WHAG a fitting venue to commemorate his nearly six-decade commitment to art.”
To deepen audience engagement, WHAG will offer a dynamic array of public programs, including workshops, guided walkabouts, and artist discussions throughout the duration, all aimed at providing enriched perspectives on Mafafo’s artistry and career. The SANKOFA: 360 Degree Exhibition opens with a reception on 28 November 2024 and will run until 28 February 2025 at the William Humphreys Art Gallery.
