The William Humphreys Art Gallery (WHAG) invites visual artists to apply for the Artist-in-Residence Programme, where they can reflect, conduct research, present their work, and create a new body of work removed from their typical environment and daily life. Artists working in all mediums are welcome to apply.

The Artist-in-Residence Programme provides a unique opportunity for visual artists from South Africa to develop a body of work over a period of six weeks. This residency offers a dedicated space for artists to develop and showcase their work, fostering cross-cultural dialogue, and contributing to the growth of the local arts community. The resident artist will be expected to hold an exhibition, public discussions, and workshops.

About William Humphreys Art Gallery:

The William Humphreys Art Gallery, an agency of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, is a national art museum situated in Kimberley, Northern Cape. Committed to promoting and developing the visual arts sector, WHAG serves as a cultural hub dedicated to enriching the artistic landscape.

Residency Details:

The residency will be hosted at the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley from 12 February 2024 to 22 March 2024. The programme is open to South African artists only.

Requirements for Application:

  1. Artistic Background:
    1. Provide a short bio or artist statement highlighting your artistic journey and influences.
    2. Outline your artistic vision and the themes you explore in your work.
  2. Exhibition Experience:
    1. Demonstrate a history of participating in group exhibitions.
    2. Showcase experience with at least one solo exhibition.
  3. Media Coverage:
    1. Provide evidence of media coverage of your works, including both print and online publications.
  4. Art Education:
    1. Provide evidence of completion of basic art training or relevant educational background.
  5. Project Proposal:
    1. Submit a detailed project proposal outlining the specific project or idea you intend to develop during your residency.
  6. Artwork Portfolio:
    1. Submit a portfolio containing at least 10 artworks that represent the diversity and breadth of your artistic practice.
  7. Online Presence:
    1. Include a link to your artist website or blog, if available, to provide additional context and insight into your work.

Expectations of the Resident Artist:

  1. Public Programming Participation:
    1. Actively participate in public programming organized by the William Humphreys Art Gallery.
  2. Solo Exhibition Commitment:
    1. Create a new body of work for a solo exhibition at the conclusion of the residency.
  3. Museum Ambassadorship:
    1. Promote and serve as an ambassador for the William Humphreys Art Gallery.
  4. Workshop Leadership:
    1. Lead workshops for the public, contributing to the educational aspect of the residency.
