Artist In Residency Programme
The William Humphreys Art Gallery (WHAG) invites visual artists to apply for the artist-in-residence programme.
Residency Details:
The residency will be hosted at the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley.
Application Deadline: 2 January 2026
Announcement to successful recipient: 21 January 2026
Date of Residency: 2 February to 6 March 2026.
Date of the exhibition opening: 12 March 2026.
The programme is open to South African artists only.
Requirements for Application:
Provide a short bio or artist statement highlighting your artistic journey and inspirations. Outline your artistic vision and the themes you explore in your work. (Not more than 150 words)
Demonstrate a history of participating in group exhibitions. Showcase experience with at least one solo exhibition (include evidence of your solo and group exhibitions).
Provide evidence of media coverage of your works, including both print and online publications.
Provide evidence of completion of basic art training or relevant educational background (Please include copies of qualifications).
5.1 Submit a detailed project proposal outlining the specific project or idea you intend to develop during your residency.
5.2 This should include a 6-week project timeline outlining the work you envisage at the completion of your residency.
5.3 Specify what medium(s) of art you will be creating and what your proposed budget will be regarding the tools and materials you require.
*Please note, we will not be accepting applications that include sculptures, installation art, or ceramics due to the constrained timeline.
Submit a portfolio containing at least 10 artworks that represent the diversity and breadth of your artistic practice.
Include a link to your artist website or social media platforms, if available, to provide additional context and insight into your work.
Incomplete or late applications will not be considered for the selection process.
Expectations of the Resident Artist:
Public Programming Participation: Actively participate in public programming organized by the William Humphreys Art Gallery.
Solo Exhibition Commitment: Create a new body of work for a solo exhibition at the conclusion of the residency.
Museum Ambassadorship: Promote and serve as an ambassador for the William Humphreys Art Gallery.
Workshop Leadership: Lead workshops for the public, contributing to the educational aspect of the residency.
