From the intense sense of urgency of that first contraction and that first wave of inspiration, where one rushes you to hospital and the other to your studio. Form and Function 2023, is a ceramic art exhibition that explores the similarities between birth and art making.
The reason for this exhibition is to pay homage to the first ceramic artists that created Ukhamba, and to the ones that came after them and experimented with the medium even further. Giving and making physical art is typically a long process that requires physical strength. It sometimes has setbacks, it can be very messy and a lot of emotions and energy are invested. Once the labour phase is done you can benefit from admiring your vessel. It is important to consider not only the content but also how it was used and for what purpose.
This exhibition consists of 12 works from the William Humphreys art Gallery in partnership with the Artbank PESP Work-based Experience Programme. It is held in the wing that is dedicated to Zulu ceramic artist Bonnie Ntshalintshali (1967-1999).
The Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP) Work-Based Experience Programme is managed by The Art Bank of South Africa, and supported by The Department of Sport, Arts & Culture recruiting young people in the creative arts sector.
